Leadership Skills Development Academy

This academy, provided exclusively by the North MS Education Consortium,is specifically designed for new and practicing school administrators.


This academy is for novice and other practicing administrators who will learn from experts about day-to-day leadership practices they may not have learned about in their college leadership program.Five days of current and relevant training presented by experienced superintendents who are leading outstanding school districts in Mississippi.The culminating day will feature Dr. Todd Whitaker, a nationally and internationally acclaimed educational and motivational speaker.


Day 1: Professional Learning Communities by Mr. Tony Cook, Superintendent of Houston School District
January 13, 2020

  • With teacher shortages in MS, highly-qualified teachers are difficult to employ and retain. This day focuses on effective instructional leadership strategies for teacher improvement.
  • PLCs offer methods through which principals can provide professional development for currently employed teachers and build capacity from within.


Day 2: Collection and Analysis of Data by Dr. Todd English, Superintendent of Booneville School District
February 3, 2020

The participant will:

  • Identify what data to collect and how to use it.
  • Learn to collect and use pertinent data to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of their school’s curriculum and instruction.
  • Learn to use data to drive instruction, improve student achievement, and increase their school rating.

Day 3: School and District Accountability, Accreditation, and Assessment by Dr. David Daigneault, Superintendent of Grenada School District
February 24, 2020

The participant will:

  • Gain an understanding of school and district accountability, accreditation, and assessment measures used to rate student achievement, schools, and school districts.
  • Learn how to plan, design, and implement strategies to improve their schools and student’s achievement.

Day 4: Building a Safe and Positive School Culture by Dr. Rob Picou, Superintendent of Tupelo Public School District

The participant will understand:

  • The process of establishing a safe and positive culture where all students can learn.
  • Strategies used to establish practices to create a safe and orderly teaching and learning environment where all students can learn.


Day 5:  Increasing the Teacher Pipeline:  Recruitment and Retention by Dr. David Rock, The University of Mississippi

April 9, 2020

The participant will understand:

  • State and national teacher pipeline data
  • Key problems that are shrinking the professional pipeline

  • Strategies used to recruit, retain and support teachers

 


Day 6: School Leadership by Dr. Todd Whitaker, Indiana State University
June 16, 2020

It is an awesome opportunity for NMEC to bring Dr. Todd Whitaker to MS for a one-day motivational and instructional seminar on school leadership. All administrators are encouraged to attend.Dr. Whitaker is nationally recognized and a high demand speaker on educational leadership and other educational issues.
