2020-2021 Leadership Skills Development Academy

This academy, provided exclusively by the North MS Education Consortium,is specifically designed for new and veteran school administrators.

This academy is for novice and veteran practicing administrators who will learn from experts about day-to-day leadership practices they may not have learned about in their college leadership program.



Six days of current and relevant training presented by Mississippi Department of Education personal and experienced superintendents and who are leading outstanding school districts in Mississippi.


Day 1: Keeping the Team Together by Dr. Michelle Bivens, Pontotoc City School District
October 22, 2020
  • When organizations experience difficult situations, such as COVID-19 pandemic, team members often feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and demoralized.  This first session will examine team building skills, how to support, students, staff, and parents, and overcoming obstacles in new and challenging educational settings.
Day 2: District and School Communication Within the Community by Dr. Eddie Peasant, Superintendent of Starkville School District
November 12, 2020
  • When it comes to children and school, parents want information.  This session focuses on what, when, and how to share information concerning their children and school.
Day 3: Creating a Positive and Safe School Culture During a Constant State of Change, by Mrs. Christie Holly, Superintendent of Tishomingo School District
January 14, 2021
  • Communication is key for any leader.  Good communication skills allow the message to be conveyed without damaging relationships.  School administrators are frequently tasked with having difficult conversations, whether it be with a parent, teacher, student, or other school administrators.  This session focuses on ways to have those conversations so that all parties leave with a clear understanding and with their dignity intact.

Day 4: Dignified Dialogue, by Dr. Adam Pugh, Superintendent of Lafayette County School District

Day 5:  Various Roles of Leadership-- The View Looking Back Perfects Moving Forward; Mr. Ken Byers, Superintendent of Amory School District
March 16, 2021
  • This session will highlight the necessary differences in leadership during good times and bad.  In order to successfully move your school and students forward,  the administrator must self-reflect on past practices to evaluate what was successful, what was not and the needed changes to improve his or her professional practice.
Day 6: Determining Professional Development Needs for Staff by Dr. Kristina Livingston, Academic Coach, Mississippi Department of Education
April 8, 2020
  • What does quality professional development look like in a face-to-face and a virtual setting?
  • How to keep participants engaged during professional development
  • How to monitor implementation of professional development in the educational setting

    The first two days of training will be virtual by zoom meeting.  The last four days are yet to be determined as more information on a Covid-19 vaccine becomes known.  In the event the last four days are face to face training at:
